RCPS Celebrates Black History Month 2024
Image with RCPS logo, says Proudly Celebrating Black History MonthRockdale County Public Schools is proud to kick off Black History Month 2024! This year's theme is African Americans and the Arts. The theme is created each year by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, an organization created by Carter G. Woodson to preserve the legacy of Black History Month. We honor the triumphs, struggles, movements, cultures, creativity, legacies and possibilities of African-Americans & global diaspora of African descent past and present. We highlight the past in order to inspire the future. Here are just a few of the events, activities, and resources throughout the district:

Board of Education

•  On Thursday, February 15, 2024, 7 p.m. at the RCPS Board Room, 960 Pine Street, Conyers, GA, the Rockdale County Board of Education will highlight five local Black history trailblazers and community leaders:
Sandra Roesser (the first African American member of the Board of Education),
Tolbert Morris, Jr. (first African American male on the Board of Education and founder of the Helping Hands Outreach community health center),
Dr. Samuel T. King (first African American Superintendent of Rockdale County Public Schools),
Katrina McCollum Young (first African American Chair of the Rockdale County Board of Education and first African American female President of the Georgia School Boards Association), and
E.R. Shipp (Rockdale County native, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, community historian).
Family, friends, and community members are invited and welcome to attend.
